LFL royalty Karmine Corp is taking over the LEC spot of Astralis, joining the LEC from the start of the 2024 season
As the battle for the 2023 World Championship rages on in South Korea, we’re briefly interrupting to bring EMEA LoL eSports fans some news from a little closer to home. We’re happy to announce that 2023 EMEA Masters Summer Champions Karmine Corp will be taking over the LEC spot of Astralis. The team will make its LEC debut in the 2024 LEC Winter Split and we’re so excited to see what they’ll bring to the Berlin stage.
If you know anything about League of Legends (LoL) in EMEA, then chances are that you’ve already heard of French powerhouse and fan favourite Karmine Corp. Qualifying to the La Ligue Francaise (LFL) First Division in 2021, Karmine Corp went onto win two LFL titles and four EMEA Masters trophies, making the team one of the most decorated organisations in the EMEA Masters ecosystem.
The French community has consistently been one of the loudest and most passionate in the EMEA region. At our recent 2023 LEC Season Finals in Montpellier, in the Occitanie region, we were blown away by the support our teams received from the French crowd and we can’t wait to welcome Karmine Corp’s loyal fanbase to the LEC.
But as one door opens, another closes, and in welcoming Karmine Corp to the LEC we must also say goodbye to Astralis. They’ve had an unforgettable three years in the LEC and we wish the team and its players all the best moving forward.
“Astralis has been a valued partner to us throughout its time in the LEC and we wish the organisation the very best with its future endeavours,” the Director of League of Legends Esports EMEA at Riot Games, Maximilian Peter Schmidt, said “But we know its spot will be in capable hands with Karmine Corp. LEC fans have wanted to see the team in the league for some time now, which is, in part, due to the incredible strength of the organisation’s brand and its loyal and passionate fan base, something that has been showcased since its entry into the EMEA Masters ecosystem. We also know how locally resonant the organisation is in France, a country that is a major force in EMEA LoL Esports, and 2024 will be the season we find out whether that ERL dominance translates to the LEC stage.”
It’ll be a few months yet until Karmine Corp makes its debut but make sure to follow us on socials and keep an eye on LoleSports .com to stay up to date with all our offseason news.
What happens with Astralis’ LEC players?
All Astralis players will become free agents from the start of the upcoming offseason.
What will happen to Karmine Corp’s LFL team?
Karmine Corp will continue to compete in the LFL alongside the LEC with its LFL roster used as an academy team that will focus on developing emerging talents.
Why were Karmine Corp chosen as Astralis’ successors?
The selling team has the final say on which team their spot is sold to, as long as the purchasing team fits Riot’s criteria for a partnered organisation. The LEC works closely with both the selling team and applicants throughout the selling process and reserves the right to veto applicants on evaluation of various aspects of their application. But the final decision is made by the selling and purchasing organisations.
What does the review process look like for teams wanting to enter the league?
The LEC conducts a detailed review into any prospective partnered teams’ ownership group, brand and fandom, business history and objectives as well as their approach to player development and performance. Based on this criteria teams are either vetoed or can progress to finalise negotiations with the selling team.
Did the LEC get a cut from the sale?
Astralis is entitled to all proceeds from the sale of its spot in the league.

Ownership Group Behind Version1 Enters Strategic Partnership With G2 Esports
Esports organization Version1 has entered into a strategic partnership with G2 Esports in which Version1’s ownership will become G2 shareholders and G2 will receive operating rights to the Minnesota Røkkr Call of Duty League team. Version1 has fielded championship teams across the Call of Duty League, Rocket League and VALORANT, and is backed by WISE Ventures, the investment arm of the Wilf family, owners of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and MLS and NWSL teams Orlando City SC and Pride, among other holdings, and entrepreneur and investor Gary Vaynerchuk.
The partnership marks a huge milestone for G2 Esports as the organization continues to expand its footprint in North America, one of the largest esports markets. Recently, G2 Esports announced its entry into VALORANT through the VCT Americas league with the acquisition of players from The Guard, and this new partnership enables G2 Esports to enter into the Call of Duty League™, with the Minnesota Røkkr team.
With the entry into Call of Duty League™,, G2 Esports continues to redefine its position as a truly global esports and entertainment organization – one of very few organizations to have as many properties, and is continually thriving at a sustainable pace. The company will now field rosters in 8 major esports titles including League of Legends, VALORANT, Counter Strike, Rainbow Six, Rocket League, Wild Rift, Sim Racing and Call of Duty, with 5 out 12 teams outside of Europe.
“Today marks yet another huge and impactful milestone for G2 Esports as we continue to expand and push the boundaries of what we want to achieve as an organization,” said Alban Dechelotte, CEO of G2 Esports. “We’re thrilled to welcome the Wilf Family and Gary Vaynerchuk to the G2 family. This strategic partnership brings us a step closer to our goal of expanding into the truly global esports organization. We’ve established ourselves as a powerhouse in Europe and it’s no secret that North America, alongside expansion into Asia, is a big priority for us. We can’t wait to bring the G2 way to yet another esports league with Minnesota Røkkr in the Call of Duty League™; it’s one of the most exciting leagues in North America with highly engaged and passionate fans. We’re excited to show them how G2 does things, and look forward to winning more trophies for our North American fans.”
With this move, the Version1 brand will be put on hold with no plans to field competitive teams. Founded in 2019, Version1 teams won a major title in the Call of Duty League™, an international Rocket League event, multiple regional championships in Rocket League and VALORANT Game Changers, and qualified for six international majors across Rocket League and VALORANT. The organization established a strong regional and national fan base while raising the bar for live event experiences, community engagement and content. The ownership group continues to see the value and potential of the esports industry, which is why they are excited to remain in esports through this partnership, and trust that G2 will continue to build toward their shared vision as G2 expands its global footprint.
Jonathan Wilf, President & Ownership Partner of Version1, commented, “I am excited about the next chapter for the Version1 story. We continue to believe in the future of esports and know partnering with a top tier organization such as G2 will best position our group for future success.”
Konrad von Moltke, Principal of WISE Ventures, added, “We have been impressed with what G2 has built: a competitive powerhouse, a strong and growing commercial engine, and a passionate and loyal fan base. In what has been a challenging esports market environment, G2’s focus on sustainable growth has been remarkable.”
