New data has revealed insights into UK fans’ digital engagement ahead of England’s World Cup clash with DR Congo tonight.

England are due to play in the Round of 32 in Atlanta at 5pm BST and fresh data released today shows almost two million UK fans have followed the tournament using Flashscore during the Group Stages. During the group stage, 1.99 million sports fans in the United Kingdom relied on Flashscore –  the world’s most popular live scores app – to follow the tournament, generating a total of 264.1 million views across the platform’s app and website.

The data, collected between 11 June and 28 June, highlights how UK fans are consuming sports information in real-time. While national allegiance remains strong, user behavior indicates a clear shift toward tracking individual global athletes alongside team progress.

Home Nations Command Attention

The home nations dominated overall team interest in the UK. England was the most-tracked team with 872,900 profile opens, followed by Scotland with 394,200.

England’s fixtures also commanded the top three spots for UK user engagement. Their opening match against Croatia drew 631,684 users and 2.9 million views, followed closely by the meeting with Ghana (2.21 million views), and Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Panama (2.05 million views).

Portugal and Ronaldo’s global appeal

Globally, however, Portugal have emerged as the tournament’s biggest attraction so far – the Cristiano Ronaldo-captained side generated 11.2 million team profile opens, making them the most-followed nation on Flashscore worldwide ahead of Brazil (9.1 million), France (8.7 million), Spain (7.8 million) and Argentina (7.7 million). England ranked eighth globally with 6.5 million profile opens.

The data also highlighted some of the tournament’s surprise stories. Cape Verde ranked as the sixth most-viewed team globally while also finishing fourth among UK users, outperforming several traditional footballing nations.

Flashscore’s team of the Group Stage

Flashscore has also revealed its official Team of the Group Stage, selected using the new Flashscore Rating.

Recently launched by Flashscore, the new rating system analyses more than 70 on-ball and off-ball performance metrics to produce an objective player rating, helping supporters better understand individual performances beyond traditional statistics such as goals and assists.

Erling Haaland emerged as the standout performer of the group stage with a tournament-leading 9.0, spearheading an attacking trio alongside Lionel Messi (8.9) and Kylian Mbappe (8.6).

France boasted the most representatives in the XI with three players selected, while defender Marc Guehi (8.4) was the only England representative.
