Expert On Tackling Gambling Harms in Society
Recent research from Swansea University highlights a significant link between strategic forms of gambling and harmful gambling behaviours, particularly among individuals with a history of mental health issues, such as PTSD.
The study marks the first identification of a direct relationship between game type and gambling risk in this demographic. Findings indicate that while participants showed a preference for both strategic games—like poker—and non-strategic games, those inclined towards strategic gambling faced a higher risk of experiencing gambling-related harm.
In a broader context, the gambling industry is grappling with increasing regulatory pressures aimed at enhancing player protection. This development has led to a shift from mere acknowledgment of the need for responsible gambling practices to active implementation of measures, including the use of AI for monitoring and supporting safer gambling behaviours.
Casinos. com spoke with Dr. Jamie Torrance, a lecturer and researcher in psychology at Swansea University, who currently focused on understanding the harms associated with online sports betting alongside the development of an educational brief intervention aimed at increasing scepticism towards gambling advertising.
“An example of where this works well can be seen with state-owned operators in Nordic countries,” said Dr. Torrance on whether the goal of more regulation is for a safter gambling ecosystem. “They maintain strict regulations yet do not have a huge concern about the black market. Instead of pushing customers away, proper regulation should ideally attract them back to legal platforms.”
“Increased regulatory oversight should lead to healthier gambling practices. It’s important to engage with cybersecurity measures to block illegal operators, whether they use VPNs or target specific regions. The challenge is having the right people in place, both in terms of technical skills and policymaking.”
It’s often said tighter regulations will drive customers to the black market, a point which Dr. Torrance contests.
“Based on my research and consultations with various stakeholders, it’s clear that the black market is perceived as a significant threat to the legitimate gambling industry. However, I believe it’s somewhat overemphasized,” explained Dr. Torrance.
“Many in the gambling sector often claim that the black market poses a monumental risk, yet from my discussions, I don’t think it’s as dire as they suggest.”
“The gambling industry warns that stringent regulations drive customers toward the black market. In theory, tighter regulations should actually help retain customers by ensuring a safer gambling environment. It’s not uncommon for regulators to think that increased oversight will prevent customers from turning to illegal options.”

Allwyn revolutionises National Lottery prize payments with new digital solution
Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, announced that National Lottery players who play in shops will be able to opt to have their prizes paid directly into their bank accounts for the first time.
In a partnership with payments provider, Bottomline, Allwyn has created a quick, easy online claim process that will see retail prizes of between £500.01 and £50,000 paid more quickly than ever before.
The new solution is the latest development in the revised claims process that Allwyn had to introduce when it took over as National Lottery operator in 2024. This was following the Post Office’s decision to no longer pay National Lottery retail prizes between £500.01 and £50,000 (called ‘mid-tier prizes’).
Last year, Allwyn continued to make upgrades to the process and has now directly paid out over 45,000 mid-tier prizes to in-store players – amounting to over £50 million in prize money.
This new enhancement isn’t just good news for players, but it will also significantly reduce administration and postage costs – as Allwyn will no longer need to prepare and post thousands of cheques. This cost efficiency will see more money going to National Lottery-funded Good Causes.
With the new payment solution, retail players can go to claims.national-lottery.co.uk, enter their email address and then fill in an easy-to-complete claim form – this asks for the player’s details, some details about the winning ticket, and prompts the player to upload an image of the ticket. If a winner has any questions during the process or needs some additional support, they can call Allwyn’s Customer Care Team who will be happy to help.
At this point, the default option will be for the prize to be paid directly into the player’s bank account, although they can still choose to be paid by cheque if that is their preference – which has been standard payment method for these up until now (including when the Post Office was still paying these prizes).
Once the claim form has been submitted and processed, the player will receive an email with a unique, secure link for them to submit their bank account number and sort code. The system will then automatically check that the name on the account matches the name entered on the prize claim form. As soon as this information has been successfully submitted by the player, the payment will be processed and will be paid directly into the player’s bank account within 24 hours*.
Allwyn’s Operations Director, Jenny Blogg, said: “We’re delighted to introduce this completely new payment solution, which will see, for the first time, people who play The National Lottery in shops be able to have their prizes paid directly into their bank accounts.
“Not only will this see these prizes paid faster than ever before, but it also drastically cuts down on administration and postage costs. This cost efficiency will see more money going to the Good Causes that The National Lottery supports and see prize money in players’ pockets in record time – so it really is a win-win.”

1/ST and Goodwood Racecourse announce Group 1 pathways between the United Kingdom and North America
1/ST, North America’s preeminent Thoroughbred racing and pari-mutuel wagering company, and Goodwood Racecourse, one of the United Kingdom’s leading racecourses, today announce a new initiative that will see a reciprocal partnership between 1/ST-owned racecourses in North America and Goodwood Racecourse in the United Kingdom.
This exciting new partnership will see horses gain automatic entry following success at the Pegasus World Cup meeting at Gulfstream Park on January 25, and at Goodwood Racecourse’s world-famous five-day festival, the Qatar Goodwood Festival presented by Visit Qatar.
The Pegasus World Cup Turf winner in 2025 will be granted automatic entry to the 2025 running of the Qatar Sussex Stakes. Likewise, the victor of the 2025 Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf will gain automatic entry to the Qatar Nassau Stakes in 2025.
Additionally, the winner of this year’s £1m, Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes will gain automatic entry to the Pegasus World Cup Turf in 2026 and the winner of the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes will gain automatic entry to the Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf in 2026.
This new partnership will create an easily accessible pathway for horses to compete both in North America and the United Kingdom and help to encourage top-tier racehorses to travel and increase international participation at both fixtures – while also bolstering elite fields for global audiences and deeper fan engagement.
Aidan Butler, President of 1/ST, said: “Thanks again to our friends at Goodwood Racecourse as our partnership enters its second year. We can’t wait to see how our Pegasus World Cup Turf winners fare on the other side of the pond and look forward to welcoming the victors of the Qatar Sussex Stakes and Qatar Nassau Stakes back to Gulfstream Park in late January 2026 for one of the most lucrative racedays on the East Coast.
“These reciprocal pathways mark the latest strides in 1/ST’s bid to broaden the appeal and international participation in the world’s major races. We’ve already seen such incentives reap immediate rewards when Crimson Advocate won at Royal Ascot in 2023, having punched her automatic spot via our Royal Palm juvenile series at Gulfstream Park. Now, Miami can hopefully work its magic again with the Qatar Goodwood Festival!”
Edward Arkell, Director of Racing at Goodwood Racecourse, added: “We are thrilled to announce this fantastic new initiative, and I would like to thank 1/ST for their enthusiasm and support. By pairing two of our most prestigious races with a pair of turf races at the Pegasus World Cup meeting, we are confident that we have unlocked a well-scheduled gateway.
“This partnership also highlights the importance of collaborating with the best horseracing in the World and allows us the opportunity to showcase the obvious benefits of working alongside the North American horseracing circuit.”
