Drawing numbers is the most important but also most critical process in all lotteries and games of chance. The players must be able to trust the integrity of this process. Although manual draws using lottery machines guarantee the requisite transparency, they are cost-intensive and not suitable for lotteries with frequent draws. Electronic Draw Systems have been available on the market for a number of years now, but so far they have failed to comply with some key principles: they are often not transparent, have security flaws or provide unverifiable results, which can undermine public trust in the system.

The perfect seed thanks to blockchain technology

In adessoDraws, the lottery experts at IT service provider adesso have developed an innovative system that meets all requirements: unpredictability, transparency, non-repudiation, understandability, replicability and auditability. What’s more, thanks to its use of blockchain technology and an open source algorithm as a random number generator (RNG), adessoDraws is completely transparent and secure. Every draw is audit-proof, as each stage of the draw is documented.

At the heart of the drawing method is a seed that is generated completely at random. The seed is the necessary starting point to initiate a widely used algorithm to digitally generate random numbers. With the same seed, the algorithm always produces the same value, so the true randomness lies in the seed itself.

adessoDraws generates the seed from the decentralized blockchain. The seed is calculated from publicly available, non-definable random data that is stored in the blockchain on thousands of computers simultaneously. This makes the seed completely random, forgery-proof and fully transparent. Even the players themselves are able to view the electronic lottery draw with adessoDraws and verify the draw process.
