MERKUR Casino has donated £2000 to Somerset Wildlife Trust, as part of MERKUR’s ongoing community programme.

Somerset Wildlife Trust, formed in 1964 under the different name of The Somerset Trust for Nature Conservation, encourages action for nature through community participation, citizen science activities and spreads its message through the arts, culture and health sectors.

The donation will help support their community engagement programme across Somerset and has established MERKUR Casino as a Gold Corporate Sponsor.

MERKUR will support the Trust’s work in maintaining the connection between nature and local community, as well as aiding in event fundraisers and professional services.

The Trust seeks to engage local people and communities in the expansion and enhancement of wildlife habitats, aiming to bridge the connection between conservation and green/blue spaces (natural environments that include both vegetation and water bodies).

Services provided by the Trust include facilitated nature experiences, training and support for non-nature groups, community land advice and both online and printed resources that are accessible to the public. These resources play a critical role in the restoration and creation of nature spaces, connecting communities and inspiring newcomers to get involved.

Theresa Jones, Fundraising Development Manager at Somerset Wildlife Trust, said: “Our Wilder Communities team has been supporting lots of communities with advice to get started or continue with amazing local projects across the county. Areas and groups supported include the Welly to Wivvy corridor, Drayton Parish Council, Ash & Martock nature group, Taunton Rotary, Enmore School, and Seeds of Hope.

“Members of the engagement team delivered nature and wellbeing activities including nature-based reading (fiction and nonfiction), a seasonal craft activity of painting/mark making with blackberries and creating a nature inclusion poem together to be displayed in the library at Langport over the summer. This resulted in lots of positive interactions with families with many attending as it was a free summer holiday activity. This has helped to continue building our ongoing relationship with the library service in Somerset who are really keen to do more with us.”

Chief operation officer at MERKUR, Mark Schertle, said: “We are pleased to be working with Somerset Wildlife Trust and to support their vision to create and conserve the county’s wildlife and environment. Additionally, their passion to spread the word and encourage others to get involved aligns perfectly with the MERKUR Community programme, so for us to assist them in their mission is fantastic and gives us the opportunity to give back to the communities in which we operate.”
