GambleAware Awards £2M Funding to Organisations Across Great Britain to Help People with Long-Term Recovery from Gambling Harms
Ten organisations from across Great Britain have been awarded funding from GambleAware, to aid the long-term recovery of people who have experienced gambling harms.
The organisations have been awarded funding from GambleAware’s £2m Aftercare Funding Programme (AFP) to help people with longer-term recovery from gambling harm, providing them with the additional support they might need so they can live happy and healthy lives.
The organisations were chosen following a rigorous selection process involving a panel of experts, including two members with lived experience. The chosen organisations demonstrated how they would work towards helping people have sustained recoveries from gambling harm. This included improving mental health and wellbeing, increasing practical skills such as financial and employability skills, and increasing people’s confidence and self-belief in their abilities.
Anna Hargrave, GambleAware’s Chief Commissioning Officer, said: “Enabling people to access treatment and support to reduce or stop their gambling is essential. But there is less known about how to ensure this recovery can be sustained over the long term. This is why our Aftercare Funding Programme was set up to fund projects which support recovery for people to help them rebuild their lives.
“These ten organisations were chosen to receive funding because of their innovative approaches, as well as their abilities to reach specific communities. We look forward to seeing how the projects develop.”
Two levels of funding were available; up to £150,000 for smaller or newer organisations or for those looking to test an approach, and up to £350,000 for larger organisations that were already established and wanted to grow or develop their work further.
One of the organisations chosen, Cyrenians, will be using the funding to enable one-to-one and group trauma-informed support for those within the homeless community in Edinburgh. It will develop a pioneering approach building capacity to enable its staff to be able to identify, address and support the long-term recovery of people experiencing homelessness affected by gambling.
Amy Hutton, Cyrenians Director of Services, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to develop our responses to the impacts of gambling amongst people experiencing homelessness. This is an often-neglected issue for which we are keen to develop a model of care and support which acknowledges homelessness as a complicating factor, while drawing upon the wider principles of lasting recovery.”
Acta Community Theatre will provide a creative peer support group in Bristol, open to people from all backgrounds who are in recovery from gambling and looking to sustain their recovery. They will deliver a series of creative sessions, using a range of storytelling techniques, theatre games and exercises, and other art forms to make a safe space where people feel able to share their stories and experiences.
Oliver Jones, Acta Community Theatre Director, said: “We are extremely grateful to receive funding from the Aftercare Funding Programme as we know from experience the huge impact problem gambling can have on individuals and their families. We will be working creatively with participants from a diverse range of backgrounds to boost their confidence, social connections and wellbeing.
“The opportunity for people to use their imaginations, express themselves and tell their own stories in a supportive environment is at the heart of our approach. We aim to nurture their creativity and give them agency in their life choices and decision-making.”

UK risks losing safer gambling leadership position – warns BetBlocker.org chief of partnerships
Pedro Romero, chief of partnerships at safer gambling software provider BetBlocker.org has highlighted the sense of insecurity among Research, Education and Treatment organisations arising from the publication of the UK Government’s White Paper on gambling reform.
Speaking following February’s edition of ICE where BetBlocker and US-based International Centre for Responsible Gambling (ICRG), shared a £41,000 pool which was provided by leading brands Light and Wonder, Flutter, Betsson Group, IGT, Novomatic, Neccton and Playtech Pedro Romero noted: “The main talking points at ICE 2024, particularly in relation to safer gambling, revolved around the publication of the White Paper which has caused so much anxiety.
“It’s concerning that many in the third sector feel alienated from critical conversations about the future of safer gambling and harm minimisation.
“The potential implications of this disconnect are significant, not just for the individuals and communities we serve, but for the UK’s reputation in the field.
“We must find a way to bridge this gap and work together to address the challenges ahead. Otherwise, I fear the UK risks losing its leadership position in advancing safer gambling practices.”
Regarding the £20,500 donation which was presented at ICE he added: “We have earmarked these funds with a dual purpose in mind. Primarily, it will assist with our running costs, which as a small charity is crucial for the sustainability of our operations.
“Additionally, we are excited about a very special project that we’re planning for ICE 2025 in Barcelona. Without giving too much away, it’s a development that aims to pay tribute to both Clarion and the city of Barcelona. We believe it will make a significant impact and we look forward to unveiling it.”
Romero spoke positively about the relocation to Barcelona stating: “ICE 2024 served as a fantastic farewell to London, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in Barcelona.
“While there’s a certain sadness in leaving a city that has been such a great host, the move to Barcelona is an exciting development. It represents a fresh opportunity for ICE to be the global gaming hub in a vibrant, dynamic city. We are very much looking forward to what the future holds in this new location.”
